Extractions

Nobody likes to lose a tooth, and your dentist will likely do everything possible to save a natural tooth. There are some situations, however, when tooth removal is essential, and in fact it might be needed to preserve your good oral health and the health of your other teeth.

Turn to Dr. Amy Trujillo at Summit Dental when you believe you might be in need of a tooth extraction. Dr. Trujillo offers comfortable and painless tooth removal procedures when a tooth extraction is necessary.

Reasons to Undergo a Tooth Removal Procedure

Dr. Trujillo may recommend a tooth extraction if you have severely damaged or decayed teeth that are causing other oral health issues. Some patients need to undergo a tooth removal procedure before orthodontic treatment or to improve their bite. Others may need extractions for baby teeth that never fell out. Often, people need to have their wisdom teeth (adult molars) extracted.

There are a number of other reasons an individual might need to have a tooth extracted, and these include the following:

  • Reduce overcrowding
  • Prepare a site for dental implants
  • Remove chipped or fractured teeth
  • Treat severe gum disease
  • Restore proper jaw function
  • Reduce the risk of an infection

Benefits of Tooth Extraction

Undergoing a tooth extraction may be necessary for both functional and cosmetic reasons. Some of the benefits of this procedure include:

  • Improves bite
  • Improves appearance of the smile
  • Reduces the risk of gum disease
  • Surrounding teeth remain healthy
  • Little to no downtime involved

How Tooth Extractions Are Performed

Dr. Trujillo may use a simple or surgical technique to perform a tooth extraction. These procedures are performed right in our office under local anesthesia. Dr. Trujillo will use a special technique to either break up the tooth into small pieces before removing it, or loosen the tooth with forceps before lifting it from the socket. You will barely feel anything during this procedure and will be given specific post-procedure instructions to ensure proper healing.

What to Expect After Your Procedure

If you are having wisdom teeth removed, you will need to make sure you avoid eating from the side of the mouth that was treated and refrain from using a straw. Irritating the treated area in any way can prevent a blood clot from forming, which causes a problem known as dry socket. If you are undergoing a tooth removal procedure to have other teeth removed, you will need to eat from the opposite side of the mouth and refrain from touching the treated area with your tongue until the tissue has completely healed. Eat soft foods immediately after the procedure, trying other foods as chewing becomes more comfortable.

If you have any facial swelling, you can use ice packs to help reduce the swelling and discomfort. Pain after the procedure is generally minimal, and if you need to, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever.
